The Spiritual House

Titles of The Church (6)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

PDF copy

Today we look at another title of the Church.

NAU 1 Peter 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

A living stone is a stone that has life in it. We Christians are living stones, and we are being built up as a house, not a physical house, but a spiritual house.

We Cannot Isolate from Other Christians and Live by Ourselves

First of all we can’t isolate from other Christians and live by ourselves. Only one stone can’t be built into a house, no matter how big and how wonderful that stone is. It needs stones and stones to build a house.

There is no room for individualism. Many Christians don’t want to relate to other Christians, they say that they don’t need to go to Church, they can worship God and meditate the Word of God at home. That is not Christianity. Maybe this way is alright with Buddhism, indeed many Buddhists meditate the word of Buddha in isolation; but that’s not Christianity. We Christians concern not only for our own salvation, even though salvation is important, but that’s not our only concern. We are baptized into one body; we, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house of God.

The Household of God

Titles of The Church (5)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

NAU  Ephesians 2:19 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,

Apostle Paul says to the Christians in Ephesian church that they are of God’s household. What does the word household mean?

God’s Household means God’s family

I check the meaning of the word “household”  in the English dictionaries:

  • A house and its occupants regarded as a unit. (Oxford English Dictionary)
  • The people in a family or other goup that are living together in one house (Merriam-Webster English Dictionary)

According to these English dictionaries, people in the household may or may not be one family, as long as they live together in the same unit, they are considered in the same household.

Then what about the meaning in Greek? The Greek word for “household” is “οἰκεῖος” (oikeios), it means:

  • members of a family, relative (Friberg, Analytical Greek Lexicon).
  • persons who are related by kinship or circumstances and form a closely knit group (Bauer-Danker, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament)
  • one who belongs to a particular household or extended family (Louw-Nida, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament)

All three Greek dictionaries define oikeios as family (or kinship), not just people living in the same house.

Apostle Paul says Christians are of God’s household, that means we are of God’s family, therefore each one of us is a member of God’s family.

The Pillar and Support of The Truth

Titles of The Church (3)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

Today we study another title of the church:

NAU  1 Timothy 3:15 15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.

Apostle Paul says the church is the pillar and support of the truth.

First we will study the meaning of truth, then what is the pillar and support of the truth.

Biblical Meaning Of Truth

What is truth? I am not talking about the definition of truth in the dictionary, which we can look it up quite easily; but I am talking about the biblical meaning of truth. Usually we only think of truth is the opposite of falsehood, yet the meaning of truth in the Bible is vast and deep.

1. Our God is God of truth

NAU  Isaiah 65:16 16 “Because he who is blessed in the earth will be blessed by the God of truth; And he who swears in the earth will swear by the God of truth; Because the former troubles are forgotten, And because they are hidden from my sight!

2. The word of God is truth

NAU  John 17:17 17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.

Other references: 2 Samuel 7:28;1 Kings 17:24; Psalm 119:43; Psalm 119:142; Psalm 119:151; Psalm 119:160; Jeremiah 23:28.

The Temple of God

Titles of The Church (2)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

PDF copy

Today we continue to study the titles of the church, let’s turn to:

NAU  2 Corinthians 6:16 16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

NAU  Ephesians 2:21 – 22 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.

These two passages point out that:

  • We Christians are the temple of God: “we are the temple of the living God” (2 Corinthians 6:16)
  • The temple of God is where God dwells: “I will dwell in them…” (2 Corinthians 6:16), “a dwelling place of God in the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:22)

The Temple Of God And The Presence Of God

I don’t want to go into the Old Testament sacrificial system regulations, we just focus in the temple of God.

The temple of God is where God dwells, when people come into the temple of God, they can sense the presence of God.

Today there is no physical temple of God anymore, the temple was destroyed in AD 70. We cannot examine whether people can sense the presence of God inside the physical temple of God.

I think for those of us who come from non-Christian families, we did enter into the pagan temples before. I can recall that when I entered into those pagan temples, even though I didn’t see anything supernatural, but I could sense some kind of presence there. When Pastor Bentley and I were serving God in Singapore, one time we went to Cameron Highlands in Malaysia; We joined a tour package to visit different tourist spots. One of those spots was a Chinese Taoist temple; We didn’t want to go in, so we waited outside while the others went in. I looked at the idols at the front gate and the front court, I sensed that it was the enemies’ territory; The enemies were looking at me while I was looking at those idols.

If people can sense the presence of the evil power in the temples of demons, then people should sense the presence of God in the temple of God.

The Body of Christ

Titles of The Church (1)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

PDF copy

Introduction

The first title of the church that we are going to study is a very familiar one: The body of Christ. What does this title “The body of Christ” tell us?

First of all, the word “church” here does not mean the church buildings nor the local churches, it refers to the universal church that includes all the Christians.

The Church Is The Body Of Christ

The Bible teaches that the church is the body of Christ, that means the Lord Jesus Christ is the head of the church.

NAU Romans 12:5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

NAU 1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.

NAU Ephesians 1:22 – 23 And He (from the context the word “He” refers to God) put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

NAU Colossians 1:18 He is also head of the body, the church; and he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he himself will come to have first place in everything.

Other references: Ephesians 4:12; Colossians 1:24; Colossians 2:19.

Fishers of Men

Titles of Christians (1)

Brothers, sisters and friends, in the past few months we have been studying an important topic in the Bible: “The Kingdom of God and Eternal Life”. I have put all the 14 messages on this topic on the website: http://www.gospelandsalvation.com. You can go to the website to read all those messages; you can also download a PDF copy of the messages that you like. Today we begin to look at another important topic: The titles of Christians in the Bible.

Many years ago, when a Christian sister heard the term “Titles of Christians,” she said to me, “What? Christians have titles?” She was very surprised to hear the term “Titles of Christians.” Oh yes, Christians have many titles in the Bible. We know that Yahweh God has many different titles, and that the Lord Jesus Christ has many different titles, but people don’t talk much about the titles of Christians. Indeed Christians have many different titles too, and each title carries a different meaning.

But why do I want to study the titles of Christians? Because when we understand the meanings of these titles, we will know what we should do and how we ought to live our lives in this world. We have to always bear in mind that if we live a life according to the teaching of the Bible, we will bring glory to our Father in heaven and to our Lord Jesus Christ, and the people in the world will praise Yahweh God and our Lord Jesus.

The first title that we will study today is: “Fishers of men”.

The Small Gate and the Narrow Way

The Kingdom of God and Eternal Life (14)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

PDF copy

In the last two messages we have looked at two very important questions: Why is it that we cannot have eternal life simply by doing good deeds? And will Christians who still live in sin have eternal life? Today we are going to study another important aspect of eternal life.

NAU Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

Here the Lord Jesus says that if we want to have life, we will have to choose the narrow gate because only the small gate and narrow way leads to life, but few people find it. Most people will enter though the wide gate and the broad way, but that only leads to destruction.

  • Why do so few people find the small gate and the narrow way? Why do most people find the wide gate and the broad way?
  • What do the small gate and the narrow way stand for? What do the wide gate and the broad way stand for?

Now we will look into the word of God to find the answers.

Rivers of Living Water

The Kingdom of God and Eternal Life (11)

Sermon by Pastor Sylvia Chan

We have studied eternal life in the kingdom of God, yet we can also have a foretaste of eternal life in the present age, which is a life of righteousness, peace, joy, freedom, and knowing the Only True God Yahweh and the Lord Jesus Christ. Today we are going to study another aspect of the foretaste of eternal life.

NAS John 4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”  (Joh 4:14 NAS)

Here the Lord Jesus says he is going to give us water to drink; whoever drinks of this water shall never thirst, because this water shall become in that person a well of water springing up to eternal life.

The Importance of the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ

Resurrection Day Message (1)

Resurrection Day (or Easter Sunday) is the day on which we commemorate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Two thousand years ago the Lord died on the cross on a Friday, then on the first day of the following week he was resurrected, he came back to life.

Most people in the world today, even non-Christians, are familiar with the story of the crucifixion and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, therefore I will not repeat the whole story here; but I would like to emphasize the importance of his resurrection, and the connection between his resurrection and our lives.

Recapitulation

Brothers, sisters and friends, last time we studied eternal life in the kingdom of God; if you want to have eternal life, you have to be in the kingdom of God, which means that you submit to the kingship of God, you obey God’s commandments. Apostle John defines eternal life as the life in Jesus Christ. If you live in Jesus Christ in the present age, you will have eternal life in heaven in the age to come; but if you don’t live in Jesus Christ in the present age, you won’t have eternal life in heaven in the age to come. Life in Jesus Christ in the present age leads to the eternal life in heaven. That’s what we studied last time, today we are going to study deeper about the life in Jesus Christ.

Eternal Life is to know the only true God and Jesus Christ

NAU John 17:3 This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

This verse is in the prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ before he was arrested and then crucified on the cross. Here the Lord says that eternal life is to know the Father the only true God and Jesus Christ whom the Father has sent.

Are you surprised at this statement of the Lord Jesus? If you know the only true God and Jesus Christ, you will have eternal life, it sounds so easy! Today we are going to study this verse to see what it means to know the only true God and Jesus Christ!
